Department of History


 

The department was established in the academic year 1995–1996 for both morning and evening studies. Graduate programs (Master’s in Islamic Studies and Master’s in Modern Studies) were launched in the academic year 2008–2009, and the PhD program (Islamic History) was inaugurated in the academic year 2019–2020.

Vision

The department aims to offer an educational program that relies on modern scientific research methods in the field of history and employs advanced teaching techniques utilizing modern technologies in instruction and research. Its goal is to graduate highly competent specialized personnel, whether in history teaching, historical research, or other professions that require a strong historical knowledge background, such as tourism, archaeology, libraries, archives, and related fields.

Accordingly, the department has a strategic vision to examine historical events and issues through research and study, aiming to understand them within a scientific historical framework. This approach contributes to developing an informed scientific perspective that supports societal cultural advancement and facilitates the analysis and resolution of various challenges.

Mission

To provide an academic and research-based educational service that prepares distinguished graduates in the field of history, enabling them to play a positive and effective role in society. This is particularly emphasized in historical research, teaching, and historical consultancy, as well as in delivering historical knowledge that aids in understanding and resolving various challenges facing societal development. Historians thus play a fundamental, not secondary, role in the advancement and construction of society, contributing to the achievement of a bright future.

Objectives
  1. Strengthen the mission and status of the College of Education for Girls and Tikrit University in fulfilling their academic mission and scientific goals.

  2. Prepare graduates specialized in history to work in educational and professional fields within various societal institutions, contributing to the advancement of modern Iraq.

  3. Develop analytical skills and the ability to deconstruct and systematically reconstruct historical material, master historical terms, concepts, and information, and enhance skills in handling historical documents and texts, preparing historians who understand their national and global history and serve as beacons of historical awareness in their communities and beyond.

  4. Conduct historical studies and research across all fields to contribute to societal development and advancement in education and learning.

  5. Direct the study of history to establish a positive connection between the past and present and benefit from the experiences and achievements of nations.

  6. Utilize scientific and technological advancements in historical education, studies, and research.

  7. Conduct focused studies in modern and Islamic history for undergraduate and graduate students through in-depth documentary research and scientific analysis of historical events.

  8. Organize seminars and conferences addressing key issues and problems with historical roots and contribute to proposing appropriate solutions.

  9. Encourage faculty members to participate in local, regional, and international scientific conferences.

  10. Promote scientific, intellectual, and cultural exchange with corresponding departments in other Iraqi universities.
